Chronology of Diplomatic Relations
The official date of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries is June 9, 1992. The People's Republic of China was one of the first states to recognize Georgia's independence. The Chinese embassy was opened in Tbilisi in 1992, and the Embassy of Georgia in Beijing was established in 2004. Considering this fact, intensive cooperation between Georgia and China has started, covering various fields. Cooperation mechanisms such as regular political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries and an Intergovernmental Economic Commission have been established.
In recent years, a significant increase of Chinese investments in the economy of Georgia has been realized. About 25 Chinese companies are already successfully operating in Georgia in such sectors as: construction, infrastructure, energy, and others. Bilateral trade is growing, which was facilitated by the Agreement on Free Trade signed in 2017.
Relations in the fields of culture and education are developing. Also, cooperation in the field of tourism is actively developing - from June 9, 2011, a direct flight was scheduled between Tbilisi-Urumchi and from September 11, 2023, the Georgian side established a visa-free regime for Chinese tourists. It is also worth noting the fact that since February 2012, the Chinese Government has granted Georgia the status of a "Favorable Country for Tourism".
Between the two countries, a completely new stage of relations began in 2023 after a visits of the of the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Gharibashvili, to the PRC, during which he had a high level meeting with the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping. As a result of this meeting, the parties made an official Statement regarding the start of Strategic Cooperation between the two countries. The Strategic cooperation envisages a more intense deepening of relations between Georgia and China, which should contribute to the prosperity of the two countries.
